Content, learning goals, preparation
Methodological practices in psychology continue to quickly evolve. Supervisors need to stay up to date, but time is scarce, and few training opportunities exist where supervisors can quickly learn about the state of the art. This can make it difficult to know how to respond when PhD students indicate they want to submit their work as a Peer Community In Registered Report, what to say when they ask about the smallest effect size of interest for the sample size justification of their next study, or to evaluate whether their plan to repeatedly analyze data as it comes in is a questionable research practice, or not.
The goal of this course is to provide supervisors of PhD students with the necessary knowledge to efficiently gain a birds-eye view of the state-of-the-art with respect to methodological practices in psychology. We will have a critical discussion about recent developments in experimental design, statistical inferences, bias and error detection, how to prevent selective reporting, and developments in research ethics. This course will help to guide PhD students through the fast-changing methodological landscape in psychology, prepare them optimally to efficiently navigate the peer review process when their research is completed, and support them with questions they might have about how they can design reliable but efficient studies. Attendees will also be able to ask questions about any topic related to good research practices, and discuss their views and experiences with peers.
The course requires no preparation, but offers a reading list to follow up on relevant topics.
Literature
None, but a literature list will be provided after the workshop.
