Content, learning goals, preparation

Emotions have become increasingly important in social psychological research. However, the study of emotions is a field in itself, and thus gaining knowledge about how to theorize and measure emotions often is not the primary aim of the PhD project. Yet, many projects in which emotions play a role would profit from this knowledge and how to find your way in the emotion literature.

PhD students who are interested in learning more about emotions are invited to inform us what they want to know about emotion(measures). We will thus tailor the workshop to what the students want to learn.

We distinguish at least the following topics:

  • Different theoretical models of emotion
  • How many emotions can we distinguish, and how useful is this for your research?
  • What is the role of emotion in social cognition
  • The conceptual relation between emotion components (appraisal, facial actions, subjective feelings, behavior, vocalizations, etc)
  • How to elicit emotions (in the lab, in the wild, in surveys)
  • How to measure emotions (and its components)
