This is a two-day retreat for Social Cognition track PhD candidates with one day of a specialized methodology and statistics course provided by guest lecturer Dr. Daniël Lakens. On the second day, two workshops will be given about best research practices organized by KLI teaching staff: Dr. Michiel van Elk will talk about the costs and benefits of replications in the morning, and Dr. Hans Marien will give a workshop on the latest developments on Open Science inspired by de Open Science Community Utrecht in the afternoon.

Day 1, Dr. Daniël Lakens
Teaching Format: This course aims to help you to draw better statistical inferences from empirical research, improve the statistical questions you ask when you collect data, and design better and more efficient studies. In practical, hands on assignments, you will learn techniques and tools that can be immediately implemented in your own research, such as sequential analysis, thinking about the smallest effect size you are interested in, and equivalence testing.

Assumed quantitative knowledge: You should have some basic knowledge about calculating descriptive statistics, and how to perform t-tests, correlations, and ANOVA's. A lot of the examples will be focused on experimental research, so having performed experimental research is useful as well.
Assumed computer background: We will use R in many of the assignments, but you don't need any previous knowledge of R - we will mainly use it as a fancy calculator, and I will guide you through everything you need to do.
Equipment and software requirements: Please install R, install R studio,and these R packages. If needed, see this help file on how to run R code.

Day 2, Dr. Michiel van Elk (UvA), Dr. Hans Marien (UU).
- Morning: Dr. Michiel van Elk on the costs and benefits of replications;
- Afternoon: Dr. Hans Marien on the latest developments of Open Science, inspired by the Open Science Community in Utrecht.

Please note before registering:
Because this is a retreat at an external location and not at a university, the course coordinators have budgetted a participant contribution of € 65,-.
