Please note: this course is only open for PhD-students who already participated in the KLI course 'How to publish and review', as we build upon the skills and knowledge students acquired during that course.

Content
Within this course, we will aim specifically at further developing students’ scientific story-telling using the 4W approach. The teaching staff will provide a short lecture on effective writing, the writing process, and how you can most convincingly tell a story. Attendees will be given the opportunity to work on the introductory paragraphs of a working paper and give each other feedback during the course.

Learning goals
1) Implementing the 4Ws approach in your paper, specifically in the introduction.
2) Understanding the role of story-telling in paper writing, and how to interest your audience.
3) Getting greater insights into the publication process both from an author’s and reviewer’s / editor’s perspective.

Preparation
1) Reading the core readings before the course. Additional readings are strongly recommended.
2) Two weeks before the course, students submit the introductory paragraphs of a paper they are working on. This introduction contains the three/four/five paragraphs in which you provide a general introduction to your topic and explain the goals of your research, and in which you introduce the important variables and your research question. This section precedes the theoretical background and should preferably be between one and three pages text.
3) Bring your own laptop to the course.
