Workshop information
This workshop aims to provide researchers with the tools to successfully conduct field research in organizations in the Netherlands. We aim to do this by
(a) having scientific and organizational experts present key lessons (failures & successes) in conducting organizational field studies, and
(b) having participants develop and practice their ‘pitch’ to get access to organizations.
Organizational research is difficult. One of the reasons is that the trade-off between collecting organizational data and conducting a theoretically innovative and methodologically strong study is often difficult to maintain. Another reason is that many researchers experience that, after putting in much effort contacting organizations and talking to managers, organizations change the rules or withdraw for a variety of reasons (e.g., a higher manager is not interested, other priorities come up).
This workshop provides researchers with the tools to design and conduct high quality organizational research. At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to
a) understand the added value of organizational (field) research;
b) design and conduct a good and publishable field study;
c) think about their own research from an organizational perspective;
d) translate their own research into organizational terms and
e) ‘sell’ their research to an organization.
Format
Several experienced researchers will discuss the perks and pitfalls of conducting good organizational research. Participants will then have the opportunity to discuss a research design within their own research area, with advise from these experienced researchers. Next, organizational experts (who have experience with working with academic researchers) will discuss the perks and pitfalls of getting organizations on board. Participants will then translate their research design into organizational terms and develop and practice a pitch to sell their research to organizations, with advise from all experts.
Learning goals
After participating in this course, participants should be able to:
- Understand the added value of organizational (field) research.
- Think about your own research from an organizational perspective.
- Design and conduct a good and publishable field study.
- Translate your own research into organizational terms (‘speak the language’).
- ‘Sell’ your research to an organization.
Time and location
The workshop will take place on Wednesday, May 20, 2020 from 11:00 until approx. 17:00. Location: University of Amsterdam (Roeterseiland/ REC).
